Zesco United moved to within a point of Nkana, their rivals for second position which comes with a place in the 2017 Caf Confederation Cup, after they defeated Nakambala Leopards 1-0 in a Week 34 fixture at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday.
Substitute Ayo Oluwafemi scored the only goal of the match in the 32nd minute, two minutes after replacing Ben Adamah Banh, from a free kick won by Idriss Mbombo on the edge of Nakambala’s penalty area.
The victory pushed Zesco United to 66 points from 32 matches, having played a game less than Nkana.
Due to their superior goal difference, they will be assured of moving above Nkana with a draw at Nakambala Leopards on Wednesday.
On Saturday, Zesco United travel to Lumwana Radiants while Nkana will be away to Forest Rangers when the final round of rescheduled matches will be played.
Meanwhile, Nakambala Leopards are certain of being relegated as their survival prospects to stay in the MTN FAZ Super League went out of their hands following Sunday's defeat to Zesco United.
Their relegation will be officially confirmed on Wednesday if they fail to defeat Zesco United by at least 6 unanswered goals which they need to leapfrog Lumwana Radiants, the side immediately above them, on goal difference.
Sunday's result also means that Nchanga Rangers are safe from relegation. Green Eagles and Lumwana Radiants remain in the battle for survival mathematically because of Nakambala Leopards' match with Zesco United on Wednesday.
