Senegal defeat Amajita to go top of Group B

Senegal went top of Group B at the ongoing 2017 Total Africa Cup of Nations after they came from two goals down to defeat South Africa’s Amajita 4-3 in the two sides’ second group match played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Thursday.

Senegal drew 1-1 with Sudan in their opening match played on Monday while South Africa had defeated Cameroon 3-1 on the same day.

Liam Jordan opened the scoring with the fastest goal of the continental tournament, clocked at 40 seconds and that advantage was increased in the 24th minute by Tercious Malepe for the Amajita to take a 2-0 lead at the break.

Senegal’s comeback was mounted three minutes after the break through Ibrahima Ndiaye before man of the match Ousseynou Cavin Diagne registered a quickfire brace with goals arriving in the 54th and 60th minutes. Krepin Diatta made sure of the points when he netted from a rebound although there was time for Amajita to create a nervy finish with Luther Singh scoring his fourth goal of the tournament with ten minutes remaining on the clock.

The victory took Senegal to 4 points while South Africa are level tied on 3 points with Cameroon who are third by virtue of a poor head to head record. Sudan are bottom of the group with a single point.

In the earlier match played at the same venue Cameroon got back on track to move into second position with 3 points thanks to a 4-1 victory over Sudan.

Cyprian Besong Achu’s men were on the front foot early and their pressure paid off in the 8th minute when Ketu Jih Kalvin fired past Sudan goalkeeper Mohamed for the opener, a lead which lasted until the 52nd minute when Eric Ayuk Mbu increased the advantage.

Samuel Yves Oum Gouet made it 3-0 in the 74th minute before Walaa Mohamed pulled a goal back in the 80th minute but there was still enough time for Olivier Mbaizo to score Cameroon’s fourth.

Cameroon play Senegal in their next match at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium which will kick off simultaneously with the match between Sudan and South Africa at the National Heroes Stadium on Sunday, March 5.
