Guinea have claimed Bronze at the 2017 Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after they came from a goal down to defeat South Africa 2-1 in the third place play off played at the National Heroes Stadium on Sunday.
Liam Jordan opened the scoring in the 6th minute after he was set up by Sipho Mbule but Guinea were back on level terms two minutes later after Amajita defender Katlego Mohamme put his defensive header beyond his goalkeeper Sanile Tshabalala.
Second half substitute Naby Bangoura completed the comeback with five minutes remaining on the clock when he converted a penalty which was awarded following a handball incident by Tercious Malepe.
Guinea, participating in the finals of continental youth tournament for the first time in its current format, were not expected to progress from Group A which contained Egypt, Mali and hosts Zambia. They lost their opening match to Zambia but a draw with Egypt and victory over Mali meant that they finished as runners-up to reach the semi-finals.
They lost their semi-final match 1-0 to Senegal to set up a third place play-off with South Africa who also lost by a similar margin to Zambia.
South Africa defeated Cameroon and Sudan but a defeat to Senegal meant that they finished second in Group B to qualify for the semi-finals. In Luther Singh they had the tournament’s top scorer, the only player to have scored a hat trick in Zambia.
Both Guinea and South Africa will represent Africa in May at the Fifa World Cup in Korea Republic along with finalists Senegal and Zambia.
