U20 stars welcome competition for Korea places

Lusaka Dynamos striker Conlyde Luchanga says competition in the U-20 squad is stiff but is upbeat about his chances of making the trip to South Korea.

And 2017 U-20 Africa Cup joint top scorer Edward Chilufya says the team’s performance at the world cup will be reflected in how much effort they are putting in training.

Luchanga was speaking to after the U-20 beat Division Two outfit City Circuit 4-0 in a practice match at Heroes Stadium.

The forward who featured only in the opening match at the Africa Cup against Guinea that Zambia won 1-0 and was substituted for Emmanuel Banda said that he was now firmly focussed on winning over the technical bench.

“It is part of football, sometimes it is not going your way, sometimes it is going your way, but you must pick up pieces and work hard and move forward,” he said.

“Obviously hard work pays, you must prove the coach that you are ready or not. I have been really working so hard to convince the coach that I am worth being in the team.”

Meanwhile Chilufya who is on the books of Mphande Youth Academy says competition in the team is healthy for the team.

“I am not scared of competition because all it takes is working hard. We are workers, we are soldiers and we are not scared of competition,” he said.

Chilufya who netted four goals at the Africa Cup tournament lost out on the top scorer award as South Africa’s Luther Singh backed his tally with assists.

Meanwhile the team tested their sharpness against City Circuit with Patrick ‘Dudey’ Ngoma, Damiano Kola both scoring headers.

The other goals were scored by Harrison Chisala and Edward Tembo with Beston Chambeshi shuffling his players to give everyone a run in.

In the first attacking trident that Chambeshi set up there was Kola, Ngoma and Joseph Phiri with Stephen Chulu taking up the holding midfield role.

In the final attacking set up Chilufya teamed up with Luchanga while Chrispine Sakulanda was deployed on the right wing.

Napsa Stars midfielder Enock Mwepu joined Ngosa Sunzu in the engine room as the technical bench hopes to see which plays will be worth the final ticket to South Korea.

The team is scheduled to leave for a training camp in Europe next week before finally heading to South Korea.
